Wayne County Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon and more than 30 men & women from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office spent the day with families at the Meijer Store at 21431 Grand River in Detroit on Saturday, December 16, 2017 for a free shopping spree.

The more than 90 families were recommended by elected officials, clergy members and the sheriff's office as those who were the most in need. Each family received a $75 voucher to be used for a holiday dinner and each child in the family was granted $200 to spend.

More than 300 children were able to pick out their own toys and clothes. "Other than the time I have with my own family, this is the best day of the year." said Sheriff Napoleon.

This is the third year the sheriff's office has held its shopping spree at Meijer. Since 2009, they have blanketed the county on Christmas Eve with hand delivered gifts to families experiencing hardship, but in 2015, they decided to give them exactly what they needed for the holiday.

Sheriff Napoleon said it's a joy to see the diversity of items the families choose to buy.
