Sentenced inmates who are classified as low security risk are permitted to perform labor in the kitchen, laundry, distribute linen and jail issued clothing, remove and dispose garbage/trash, perform sanitation in the housing units and support services areas, and assist with the transfer of materials/products from delivery trucks at the dock. Inmate workers are not compensated with currency, but can earn up to 25% percent sentence reduction for performing labor. The inmate worker program is operated in all three jails and annually saves over ten million ($10 million) dollars for Wayne County taxpayers.
