Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington joined Wayne County Commissioners Raymond Basham and Alisha Bell, along with the Brownstown Township Police Department and Michigan State Police to discuss a texting and driving initiative during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Michigan law prohibits distracted driving and can result in a $100 fine with increased penalties for recurring offenses. Last year, there were 14,236 crashes in Michigan involving a distracted driver, according to Traffic Crash Facts.

Sheriff Raphael Washington and members of the WCSO joined Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to pass out Easter baskets, toys and food in River Rouge. We’re thankful for the work of DRMM, which provides necessary food, clothing and shelter – even job training to those in need in our community. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office’s very first Citizens’ Academy started April 12th! It will run through May 10th, 2022. It is a concentrated 5-week training program that provides members of the community a unique behind-the-scenes experience. Wayne County Sheriff’s volunteers will learn by instruction, tours, hands-on activities, demos and more! Classes will meet on Tuesday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Apply for the next Citizens’ Academy by emailing Regina Parks at RParks1@waynecounty.com !

We must thank our hardworking communications and dispatch teams during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Here are just a few of them. One of our dispatchers, Skipper, even wore an Easter Bunny suit to work! They’re the BEST!

It was a privilege to partner with Detroit Police Chief James White and the Detroit Police Department. Between both agencies, we were able to donate about 175 expired, bulletproof vests to support Ukrainian forces fighting Russia’s invasion. We hope these can help keep citizens safe as they defend their country and themselves. #prayersforpeace -Sheriff Washington

We welcomed the first Wayne County Sheriff’s Office graduates of 2022 in March! After completing the seven-week program, these students showed they have what it takes to serve the people of Wayne County. “I couldn’t be prouder of these graduates and the hard work they’ve all put in,” said Sheriff Washington. “I look forward to adding many more members to our team! Congratulations to the class of March 2022!”

Captain Sims and Corporal Cadez, part of our S.C.O.U.T. team, hit the streets on St. Patrick’s Day. Fox 2 News rode along and encountered no drunk driving stops. Captain Sims says traffic stops like that have dropped with people being smarter about drinking and not driving. Sheriff Washington and Undersheriff Jaafar have been spending as many moments as they can this month reading to elementary and middle school children across Wayne County. Here you see Undersheriff Jaafar reading “Bad Kitty” to 5th graders at River Oaks Middle School. Sheriff Washington said several children at the elementary schools he has been visiting even said they wanted to become Sheriff Deputies! Both said they wished they could do this every day.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Marine Division, in cooperation with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge, will be conducting Basic Boating Safety Courses beginning in March 2022. The courses will be held at the John D. Dingell Jr. Visitor Center at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge 5437 West Jefferson Avenue, Trenton, MI 48183 Map and directions are detailed below.
