Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington joined Detroit Police Chief James White and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Tuesday, February 22nd to urge gun owners to be responsible with their weapons. “I have a 2-year-old grandchild, and when she unexpectedly comes over to my house, I have to think first, right away: ‘where are my guns,’” said Sheriff Washington. Detroit police statistics show that in just the first seven weeks of 2022, six children in the city were shot because they (or another child) got their hands on a loaded and unsecured firearm. In 2021, 67 children were shot Detroit and nine were killed. Free gun locks are available at the Wayne County Sheriff’s office and at any Detroit Police precinct.

We visited the Pope Francis Center and two Capuchin Soup kitchens. Knowing we are helping our less fortunate citizens warms our hearts! Today 29-year-old Deandre Williams of Detroit was sentenced to 50-75 years in prison for the murder of 50-year-old Wayne County Sheriff’s Corporal Bryant Searcy. Cpl. Searcy was brutally murdered doing the job he loved. The callous and calculated killing of this 18-year veteran was nothing short of monstrous. A wife lost her devoted partner and a daughter lost her loving father. Cpl. Searcy’s friends, colleagues and this community lost a loyal servant and kind spirit in him. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office continues to hold Cpl. Searcy’s grieving family in our thoughts and in our prayers.
“Drugs are killing our children, neighbors and society. I’m sick of this, and I know you are, too,” said Sheriff Washington. “The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a narcotics complaint about a month ago, and I’d like to commend my tireless staff for a job well done taking down another drug house in Detroit. Special thanks to the WCSO operations division, narcotics unit, special response team and executive staff. This is just the beginning. Let’s take down some more!”

Sheriff Washington was honored to be the keynote speaker and join other community leaders at the city of Westland’s annual celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy on Monday. “We’ve made giant steps forward, but there is so much to be done,” said Washington. “Let’s all continue his work!”
Sheriff Washington was honored to be invited by Pastor Marcus Lovelace of the historic Mt. Zion Baptist Church to be the keynote speaker and represent law enforcement officers. “Thank you to the men & women of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office & those who protect & serve across the country. We appreciate your daily sacrifices,” said Sheriff Washington. “We also honor those officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. You will never be forgotten.”

After a Detroit grandmother was killed by a stray bullet while ringing in the New Year in 1996, community leaders come together to urge people to avoid celebratory gunfire. Sheriff Raphael Washington said, “I don’t know what the thought is. They shoot a weapon, and they just think, ‘oh the bullet is just going to disappear.’ No, it’s coming down.” This message has been pushed for almost 25 years.

Everyone at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is remembering the late Benny N. Napoleon one year after he lost his battle to Covid-19. Benny fought hard. He was a phenomenal Wayne County Sheriff and an exceptional human being. As we remember the first-year anniversary of Benny being called home, we’re encouraging all our staff and friends to get fully vaccinated and continue to be as careful as they can. Benny couldn’t wait to get vaccinated. That’s all he wanted. We do not want to lose any more loved ones to this virus that has ravaged our country and the world.
