Wayne County Sheriff Raphael Washington joined Detroit Police Chief James White and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Tuesday, February 22nd to urge gun owners to be responsible with their weapons. “I have a 2-year-old grandchild, and when she unexpectedly comes over to my house, I have to think first, right away: ‘where are my guns,’” said Sheriff Washington. Detroit police statistics show that in just the first seven weeks of 2022, six children in the city were shot because they (or another child) got their hands on a loaded and unsecured firearm. In 2021, 67 children were shot Detroit and nine were killed. Free gun locks are available at the Wayne County Sheriff’s office and at any Detroit Police precinct.
This is what we do at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office! We continued our tradition of handing out blankets to our homeless community in Detroit. We visited the Pope Francis Center and two Capuchin Soup kitchens. Knowing we are helping our less fortunate citizens warms our hearts! Special thanks goes to Hearts of Humanity Michigan for supplying the cozy blankets for our less privileged.
“Drugs are killing our children, neighbors and society. I’m sick of this, and I know you are, too,” said Sheriff Washington. “The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a narcotics complaint about a month ago, and I’d like to commend my tireless staff for a job well done taking down another drug house in Detroit. Special thanks to the WCSO operations division, narcotics unit, special response team and executive staff. This is just the beginning. Let’s take down some more!”

After a Detroit grandmother was killed by a stray bullet while ringing in the New Year in 1996, community leaders come together to urge people to avoid celebratory gunfire. Sheriff Raphael Washington said, “I don’t know what the thought is. They shoot a weapon, and they just think, ‘oh the bullet is just going to disappear.’ No, it’s coming down.” This message has been pushed for almost 25 years.

Everyone at the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is remembering the late Benny N. Napoleon one year after he lost his battle to Covid-19. Benny fought hard. He was a phenomenal Wayne County Sheriff and an exceptional human being. As we remember the first-year anniversary of Benny being called home, we’re encouraging all our staff and friends to get fully vaccinated and continue to be as careful as they can. Benny couldn’t wait to get vaccinated. That’s all he wanted. We do not want to lose any more loved ones to this virus that has ravaged our country and the world. We send our love to Benny’s family and friends and those missing him, especially on this day. I plan to celebrate him in my own, private way by remembering him, praying for continued comfort for his family, and doing what I know Benny would want me to do: keep putting in the work and taking [...]
I, along with my staff and volunteers from the Wayne County Sheriff’s office, LOVED being a blessing to 200 kids and more than 60 families during our annual No Child Without a Christmas once again today. Each child received a $200 gift card and each parent received $100 gift cards. Seeing the joy and excitement on their faces was a truly heartwarming experience. Thank you to our sponsors: WCSYSEF, AT&T, Meijer and others!
I received these joyous packages when I was a kid, and I’ve been blessed to be able to give back with Detroit Goodfellows since 1985. Every child deserves a happy holiday, but for some, that isn’t a reality. Just $40 can get a child a beautiful care package. Thank you to Detroit Goodfellows for putting smiles on the faces of more than 30,000 area kids each year!! Donate if you can, or if you need a helping hand: https://detroitgoodfellows.org
Ho, ho, oh no! Is that a traffic ticket!? Nope! Santa was on patrol in December! Sheriff Raphael Washington and some of our Wayne County Sheriff deputies handed out $100-$250 Kroger gift cards instead of tickets! Undersheriff Mike Jaafar even wore a beard as they spread a little holiday cheer!
